Why Season Your New Canvas Swag?
Seasoning a new canvas swag is essential for making it water-resistant and preventing leaks. A very simple and effective method is to hose and wet your new swag. Here’s why seasoning is crucial:
- Water Resistance: Canvas is prone to water absorption, and seasoning creates a hydrophobic layer that prevents water from seeping in.
- Leak Prevention: Seasoning helps seal the fabric’s pores and stitching, reducing the risk of leaks and water creeping into the swag.
How to Season a New Canvas Swag:
Step 1: Set Up the Swag
- Set up your swag outside and peg it down as if you are ready to go camping.
- Grab your hose and start to gently spray the entire swag. You will notice the water will repel on the new canvas, which is normal. Gradually soak, paying attention to the stitching on the canvas. You may notice the canvas changes colour as it soaks up the water. When the manufacturer made the product, the needle and thread left tiny openings in the canvas. This is what we are trying to expand by soaking up the water and closing the holes.
- Ensure even saturation, but avoid over-saturating.
Step 2: Allow to Dry
- Let the swag air dry completely, which may take several hours or overnight.
Step 3: Wet Again
- If you would like to soak again to help with water resistance, repeat the process up to three times. There are many waterproofing products available to enhance the water repellency of the canvas, and these are an option and personal choice.
Step 4: Inspect and Touch Up
- Inspect the swag for missed areas or those needing additional attention.
Step 5: Store and Maintain
- Store your swag in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight.
- Regularly inspect for signs of wear or water damage.
- NEVER pack your swag away wet as this leads to mould. Always let it dry after a trip away. Store all your swags in protective canvas storage bags.
By following these instructions, you’ll help ensure your canvas swag remains water-resistant and durable for many adventures to come.

Seasoning your new canvas swag might seem like a chore, but it’s a crucial step in ensuring it serves you well for years.
